Resilience

Resilience is the first word that comes to mind when I think of the American Bison and what the species has endured. Before westward expansion of the United States and manifest destiny the population of bison exceeded 60 million. In under one hundred years due to acts of useless slaughter from thousands of people, the population was obliterated to near-extinction. Some experts say numbers as low as fifty bison were left in the United States. With the help of Theodore Roosevelt and others, laws were enacted to protect the bison from further damage. In 1894 killing a bison was punishable with a fine of $1,000 and imprisonment. Today with the help still from the National Park Service, the population has now grown to over 500,000. Yellowstone National Park, where I took this photo has become one of the best places of Earth to see these resilient creatures up close and personal. I remember looking at a herd of bison in the Hayden Valley and counting over eighty strong and realized more bison were in my sight than there were in existence at one point. Resilient indeed.
