King of the North-West

Olympic National Park was originally organized to protect the Roosevelt elk which provides both summer and winter habitat for them. The park houses the largest wild herd of Roosevelt elk left in the Pacific Northwest.

This must be one of the coolest wildlife encounters I’ve experienced. I was hiking in the Hoh Rainforest, on an early misty morning. It was quiet – only to sounds of my feet on the trail and raindrops falling from leaf to leaf. I turned a corner and three Roosevelt elk were grazing in thick brush, looking for the little red berries on the ends of the branches. I looked up in awe at these amazing creatures. I was so close to this beauty here that I could hear him chewing slowly on his breakfast. He towered well over me with his antlers being as tall as a door frame. After some time of having this intimate experience, he slowly ventured deeper into the brush until I couldn’t hear him any longer. Within a few seconds I was back all alone with only the sounds of rain.  Once-in-a-lifetime moments come very seldomly in life. I love that I was able to capture one of this King of the north-west.
