The Gold Rush in Bannack, Montana was filled with chaos, betrayal, and a hard way of life. In 1862, Bannack became the first capital of the Montana Territory after the population exploded to over 10,000 fortune-seekers with a major gold discovery in the area. Bannack’s sheriff Henry Plummer played a key role in the history of the area. While serving as sheriff he turned rogue, secretly leading a ruthless gang of road thieves who robbed any who sought their fortune in the area. Historians claim the gang was responsible for over 100 murders in the gold-rush towns from Bannack all the way to Salt Lake City. In 1864, Plummer and several of his compatriots were hanged without a trial for their treasonous actions. Taking the photo, I imagined a town elder sitting in this chair, looking at to the town they’ve called home, and contemplating the chaos that has ensued the past two years.
