Hi, my name is Jeffrey and Welcome to MilesFromHome!
In May 2017, I sat waiting with thousands of other soon-to-be graduates for the ceremony to begin. I heard murmurs of people boasting about their exciting new job they’re going to start on Monday, and those congratulating them even though they’re really wishing they had that job so they could make their parents proud for once. I saw sorority sisters huddled together bawling their eyes out because they know deep down that this was their high point in life, and the majority who would rather be on Broadway getting drunk instead of being dressed up like we’re going to meet up with Harry Potter at Hogwarts.
As for me, graduating college was terrifying! I had no job waiting for me afterwards, no interest in the typical “American Dream” and more confusion coming out of college than I had coming in. I needed more time to figure out how I wanted to spend the rest of my life. I refused to get trapped to the so-called normalcy of adulthood and the highlight of my career being I climbed to the top of the corporate ladder no to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
With absolutely NO travel experience, this is what I did the summer after graduating college:
–Drove 14,000+ miles through 12 states
–Hiked 600+ miles in dozens of public lands in the American West.
–Took 16,000+ pictures
–Swam in glacial runoff, encountered bears (more than once), hitchhiked for the first time, and had amazing, unforgettable moments.
MilesFromHome will give you a look into this life-changing trip and beyond. I’m hardly an expert on travel, even after such an extensive trip. I hope to show you the mistakes I made and the reality of travelling to amazing bucket-list places. For example, getting that epic sunrise photo over the Grand Canyon looks incredible. No one says you’ll be standing shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of others trying to do that same thing. Knowing what to expect and educating yourself on places before you go are the most important steps to a successful trip. MilesFromHome will offer that to you as well as much, much more.
